These are fingerprint readers as opposed to fingerprint locks. They are just part of a wired system. They are
mounted outside the door, and control an
electric strike or
magnetic lock. The electronics on some models are mounted inside, in a secure
place. Some are programmed right at the reader and others are connected to a PC and programmed at the PC. They are particularly well-suited for people who find
it difficult to insert and turn a key in a regular lock.
This makes them extremely difficult to to defeat. They cannot be picked open. Most of these
systems are weather resistant but not fully weatherproof and a plastic cover is highly recommended. They work just about anywhere. The main disadvantage of using a fingerprint reader over a battery powered fingerprint lock is that the reader will be part of a system that will be installed so it's more complicated and more expensive. The biggest advantage of a fingerprint reader over a battery powered fingerprint lock is that the reader is a dedicated device so usually it's built much better, will hold up better and be generally more reliable.
